I guess the only reason we're still alive is because we were so poor that all the heaters got cut off at bedtime.Marine4everhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08316425122927213322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481053445293173582.post-24513989665052676392013-12-31T14:03:17.719-05:002013-12-31T14:03:17.719-05:00May God bless you and keep you, Angel!May God bless you and keep you, Angel!Ed Bonderenkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03724552853113809036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481053445293173582.post-47261369541984773902013-12-31T14:02:51.706-05:002013-12-31T14:02:51.706-05:00Sounds charming, until you realize how deadly it c...Sounds charming, until you realize how deadly it can be, eh?
I had a catalytic heater in my family room.
Amazing how many people use those.
Ed Bonderenkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03724552853113809036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2481053445293173582.post-39378779923357079552013-12-31T13:15:01.263-05:002013-12-31T13:15:01.263-05:00

The ceramic bricks would be glowing from the flames; filling the rooms with heat.

None of the heaters were vented to the outside. The old house had enough air leaks to keep the carbon monoxide from building to a deadly level, but I still remember headaches, after spending a long time in their house on cold days.

At night, he'd turn the flames down to a very low setting and they'd sleep under heavy quilts. I'm guessing he was aware of the danger of carbon monoxide build up and - since he raised a family during the Great Depression - the savings in gas was a necessary demand.
