Another Day

Today is my birthday.
They don't give you the day off at work, so I burned a vacation day.

Actually I took yesterday off to take Scherie to her last visit with the surgeon and decided to take today also.
Early in the day I went to my sons store where he is remodeling and did some electrical work for him which I will finish today. Then we went to the appointment where we reviewed her MRIs and progress and we thanked the surgeon and God.
After that, our very close friends, who had moved to the other side of the mitten (and were in town for a week of training due to his long deserved promotion) stopped by to visit.
We grilled some ribeyes and had a really nice visit.

I've just hit print on a letter to my son and Scherie is about to wake up whether she knows it or not as I must be fed.
I'm drinking a cup of coffee as I type this.
I am not satisfied with the blend.
It is Folger's Black Silk.
I've been drinking various French Roasts over the years but have become disillusioned of late.
I am not a fan of Starbucks, and am not rich enough to afford Dunkin' Donuts or Tim Hortons (my favorite purchased brew) on a regular basis.
I'm leaning towards 8 O'Clock which my sister in law drinks, but brews so weak I can't taste the coffee. I haven't brewed a full strength pot of it yet.
It seems like nothing I brew smells like COFFEE when I bring the mug to my lips.
Any suggestions?.

  1. Black Silk is wonderfully smooth, even when you brew it to correct strength. It's my favorite. You may need to add more grounds than you think. A true tablespoon per 6oz cup is the actual benchmark, but if you normally have 10oz. mugs, you'll want to throw in at least a heaping tblsp per serving. Strong, smooth coffee without the burnt taste.

  2. I don't know if you're a big fan of coffees like Community Coffee or Seaport. The dark roasts aren't for the faint of heart, but will put meat on your ribs.

  4. Buy an old-fashioned stove top percolator ($20 at Walmart). Boil the heck out of it, 10 min. at least, make it strong as you like. Ever since I got mine all coffees have tasted good. And hot!

  5. Happy Birthday, Ed.

My favorite brand of coffee is Yuban. It is a product of Maxwell House and it comes in original blend, and French Roast.

IMO, there are few better coffees than this one, for the price. And ... drip coffee makers were a gift from the aliens who visit us regularly and can be seen at Wal-Mart.

  6. Thanks all. I will try all suggestions including pulling out the camp ground percolator.
    That explains Wal-Mart Mustang.

  8. Happy Birthday, and that is good news on Scherie! Re the coffee, have you tried Community Club? It's out of Louisiana, but can be ordered on line, and I love it!

  9. No suggestions on coffee....I can't stand Starbucks, either, you're right. SO bitter.

But, on a very HAPPY note...HAPPY BIRTHDAY and may I join you in thanking God for what must have been a very positive meeting with the doc...the best birthday present ever, right?

  10. Happy Birthday!

My coffee favorite is the Costco house brand Kirkland 100% Colombian. Beats Starbucks to a fare thee well and I gave up Yuban for it after one cup!

For drip coffee makers try the Hamilton Beach one without the carafe.

  11. Happy Birthday Ed. I'll bet your catching up to me now.

The best coffee I can find us when we're in Florida. I can't recall the name of it, but Publix carries is like a store brand. When Bob got it one day, I figured it would taste like crap, but it's actually very good.

  12. Well happy happy, but belated!

Folgers Columbian is all we drink, and we like it STRONG. Seems it's the most expensive and it's NEVER on sale though.

Sometimes I even have to go to Wal-Mart and get it (where it's 50 cents cheaper) because the grocery store runs out a lot.

  13. Belated best wishes for the happiest of birthdays.

I love Dunkin' but cannot afford to drink it every day either. I am a fan of Maxwell House brews. The ytaste like coffee, I think.
