I'm sure he is Catholic, but I am doubly sure he is not an economics major. He is not the intellectual leader as was Pope Benedict XVI or Pope John Paul II. I'm still hopeful he will bring more back to the church that have wandered off for some reason. Ever the optimist. I do understand the question however.
They didn't elect him because he's shrewd with finances, or has an exceptional ability to coordinate when things are tough. He's the short straw, after they ran out of straws and had to do something.
Personally, I think he's probably Catholic, but I'm not betting on it.
