"We are Americans"

From Fox News:

State officials in Oregon and Texas are vowing to fight back against any attempt by the federal government to impose new gun control laws.
The warnings come as President Obama prepares to unveil a "comprehensive" plan to address gun violence, based on the recommendations from the Vice President Biden-led task force. The plan is expected to include a call for legislation to ban assault weapons as well as a variety of executive actions.
But in Oregon, Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote a letter to Biden Monday saying his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional.
Mueller said politicians are "attempting to exploit the deaths of innocent victims" by supporting laws that would harm law-abiding Americans. The sheriff said he took an oath to support the Constitution, and laws preventing citizens from owning certain semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines would violate their rights.
"We are Americans," Mueller wrote. "We must not allow, nor shall we tolerate, the actions of criminals, no matter how heinous the crimes, to prompt politicians to enact laws that will infringe upon the liberties of responsible citizens who have broken no laws."
Meanwhile, 1200 WOAI reports that in Texas, Republican state Rep. Steve Toth plans to introduce a bill that would make it illegal to enforce in the state any federal laws restricting semi-automatic firearms or the size of gun magazines.

  1. Rep. Toth said he has a lot of support for the bill and anticipates a 90% success rate in having it make it to the Governor's desk. Perry will sign it and the fight will be on.

I wonder how the Supreme Court will react to the coming legal challenges? I'm thinking it will be a strong victory for Second Amendment rights or the start of nationwide civil disobedience. After that, Washington D.C. might want to get some cots and order some pizza. Many won't want to go home and face their constituents.

  3. By surrounding himself with children in his big show of doing something about gun control, Obama indulged heavily in the logic fallacy appeal to the people. Do Americans today know how to recognize fallacies in logic?

  6. Ed,

I hail from "Moscow on the Willamette" in Portland, OR and I must say to see a fellow Oregonian (Law enforcement office to boot) respond in this appropriate manner was refreshing. He has courage. Not because he has an inherently conservative position in a State full of liberal statists, but because he did so in spite of the recent mall shooting (Clackamas Town Center) here. I am afraid that he will probably lose his job as a result. It does make me pause to think because one of the fears I have is that when the day arises that Obama and his minions make their move to destabalize and destroy this country by force that there will be some in the military as well as law enforcement that will back his play. But on the other hand, it shows that there are many in law enforcement and the military who would actually uphold and defend the their constitutional oaths and disobey those future unlawful orders. The orders I speak are when Obama and the statists want to utilize those entities to put down any resistance to their unlawful and treasonous actions.

  7. Rosey: (I think of Bogart in African Queen as I write that):
That's interesting to know about Clackamas and your (and his) geographic location. I knew Oregon to be generally liberal, but I didn't realize he was from that mall shooting locale.
I live in Ypsilanti Township which despite democratic control (a result of the auto industry/UAW here) is mostly conservative values.
Next door is City of Ypsilanti which is liberal (Eastern Michigan University) and then next to that is the Peoples Republic of Ann Arborstan (U of M).
Yet new gun stores and ranges and clubs are here.
